An increasing number of people are paying substantial amounts of money on cosmetic procedures so as to appear more youthful. This trend can be attributed to a few underlying causes, most apparent is the change in modern beauty standards, and I believe that it is a largely adverse development.

Out of all the reasons for excessive spending on cosmetic products and procedures, the most notable would be a shift in contemporary standards for beauty. In the digital age, expectations about one’s look have changed largely due to the influence of social media. Such social platforms provide both the tools and environment for users to show their best self to others, creating unrealistic expectations of beauty for avid users. Because of this, middle-aged people might feel that they are lagging behind in terms of appearance, prompting them to spend more on both skincare products and cosmetic procedures like facelifts or skin resurfacing as an effort to catch up to the new norm. Furthermore, looking young can be a prerequisite for some people’s livelihood, especially celebrities, as these individuals may need to do so to appeal to a younger audience. This is often seen in Korea, where K-pop groupies and actors have to undergo cosmetic surgery so as to stay relevant among youths.

One positive aspect of such a development is that people may become more confident of their new looks, which can provide a boost in performance at work, especially if these individuals have to meet with customers regularly. More convincing is the fact that such standards evidently create more work for the beauty industry, providing vast financial benefits for plastic surgeons and dermatologists. Despite the aforementioned benefits, this increased demand for cosmetic procedures can be a double-edge sword, especially if there’s little intervention from authorities. Unregistered beauty clinics not having proper equipment or trained staff may fail to care for patients when complications arise. To exemplify, there have been many reports worldwide of patients dying from such procedures largely due to systemic allergic shock caused by anesthetics, evidently resulting from the lack of prior testing and unknowledgeable medical staff. In addition, unrealistic beauty standards can make those who cannot afford such procedures develop low self-esteem and isolation as they might feel left behind by peers their age..

In conclusion, while cosmetic procedures may be driven by changing beauty ideals or professional demands, the social pressure they create and the medical risks they entail make this trend largely detrimental to individuals and society alike.
