[Discussion]: Maximum salary

In many countries, a small number of people earn extremely high salaries. Some people believe that this is good for the country, but others think that governments should not allow salaries above a certain level. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

For high salaries 

Incentive for excellence, motivate employees to work harder

Against high salaries:

High salaries can lead to social division and unrest.

Extra funds can be re-invested into the company

Demotivate some low-income workers, lower productivity 

People have different opinions whether a maximum salary should be limited by the government. Although some believe that putting a limitation on compensation level can be beneficial, I would argue that employees should be able to earn as much as possible. 

There are several reasons why governments should cap employee remuneration. For one, implementing this course of action might leave companies with more funds that could be distributed among lower level employees. This would cause an immediate increase in job satisfaction in the general workforce. Furthermore, having only a few individuals with access to enormous wealth would widen the gap between the rich and the poor. This, in turn, can lead to more social issues such as inequality and discrimination. 

However, I believe it would be far more beneficial for some to be paid extremely high salaries. This is because those with a high income belong to a higher tax bracket, which means their tax contribution would also be higher than others. As a result, the government would be left with more tax money, which can be used to upgrade infrastructure and support social programs which benefits the impoverished. This, I believe, would actually help fight poverty and social inequality. Another point worth mentioning is that those who get a high level of compensation such as CEOs or politicians often work under lots of pressure and their decisions can affect the lives of many. Thus, it is only fair for their wages to match their contribution.   

In conclusion, while having a maximum salary can bring some merits, it seems to me that it would be better to not impose such limits on society’s highest earners.
