The charts below show reasons for travel and the main issues for the travelling public in the US in 2009.
The bar chart and pie chart provide insights into the purposes of travel and the travel-related issues encountered by US residents in the year 2009.
It is evident that the primary motivation for travel among Americans in 2009 was commuting to and from work. Simultaneously, the leading concern for American travelers was the cost associated with their trips.
Delving into the bar chart, it is apparent that nearly half, or 49%, of all trips undertaken by Americans in 2009 were for commuting purposes. Conversely, visits to friends or relatives accounted for only 6% of trips, while social or recreational outings comprised one in ten trips. Shopping constituted the purpose for 16% of travel, with unspecified ‘personal reasons’ making up the remaining 19%.
As depicted in the pie chart, cost emerged as the predominant factor influencing travel decisions for 36% of American travelers. Safety concerns followed closely, with almost one in five individuals citing it as their top travel consideration. Aggressive driving and highway congestion were primary issues for 17% and 14% of travelers, respectively. Additionally, 14% of respondents identified access to public transport or pedestrian space as the most significant travel concerns.
