[Table] – Fairtrade coffee and bananas (21/11/23)

The table compares how much money 5 European countries spent on two Fairtrade goods. Overall, sales of Fairtrade products generally increased in most nations, with the exception of Belgium and Sweden for bananas. Furthermore, the UK witness the highest increase in terms of spendings for both items.

In 1999, sales for Fairtrade coffee in the UK were 1.5 million euros, but it increased by nearly twenty-fold in 2004. Following this was Switzerland, where the initial revenue was actually highest at 3 million euros. However, its increase was not as significant, and by 2004 it came second at 6 million euros. When it comes to Fairtrade bananas, sales in the UK topped the chart for both 1999 and 2004, at 15 and 47 million euros, respectively. Figures for Switzerland and Denmark also jumped to 5.5 and 4 million euros accordingly.

Sales of Fairtrade products were lower in both Belgium and Sweden. For Fairtrade bananas, revenue of both countries witnessed a fairly small increase over the period, but never exceeded 2 million euros. With Fairtrade bananas, however, these were the only countries where sales decreased by nearly half of their original values after 5 years.
