[Opinion] Team sports as a way to teach children cooperation
The best way to teach children to cooperate is through team sports at school. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Agree:
It is of the opinion that team sports is the best activity to nurture cooperation among school-aged children. In my point of view, I partly agree with the above statement.
On the one hand, it is understandable why the incorporation of team sports as a mandatory activity at school can help students work with each other. Firstly, there is a great variety of roles available in these sports. One case in point is that of soccer, in which a team usually has 11 players, each with their own role, be it attacking, defending or keeping the goal. As one single person cannot fulfill every position, children have to learn to work with one another. Secondly, playing sports is a great extracurricular activity where pupils can bond with each other. Since they would be spending a great deal of time in a team, peers would be able to get to know their teammates. As these close-knitted relationships form, students will find it easier to work with others in their teams.
On the other hand, I believe that while sports provide a great environment for cooperation, other activities are just as potent, or in some cases, more suitable. To start off, most sports require their players to be mobile, and as such are not cut out for children with disabilities. For these individuals, sports which require fast movements are inadvisable due to their impairment. Because of this, a more sedentary approach, such as solving puzzles, or group handouts would be more suited for them to work with their pupils in class. Furthermore, students can learn to cooperate through class projects and presentations as these assignments also require students to delegate tasks to each other in order to finish on time. These activities are not only more cost-effective, as they do not require much equipment, but also easily implemented in an existing curriculum of most classes in the form of homework.
All in all, while it is true that sports play a vital role in promoting collaboration between peers, I believe that other types of activities are just suitable. It is recommended that schools provide their students with a wide range of choices so as to enable pupils to work with one another on a daily basis.
